Observation Narrative
A very densely vegetated interdune swale bordered on both sides by dune scrub and located about 250 meters behind the beach. The wetland is probably permanently saturated and periodically inundated during very wet periods and storm surges. The vegetation is co-dominated by a tall Panicum virgatum var. virgatum and Panicum verrucosum, which forms a low "understory." A relatively diverse assemblage of associated graminoids and forbs co-occurs. Despite minor evidence of feral pig rooting, the site is in good condition. Some invasion by the shrub-sized trees of Diospyros virginiana, Populus heterophylla, Pinus taeda, and Salix caroliniana is occurring around the edges of the wetland.
